Accidental East Bay Treasure
The pedestrian bridge that connects the Coliseum Bart station to the Oakland Coliseum is no physical beauty. It was built in 1973 as an afterthought. It is reminiscent of a exhaust pipe - flooring made of a concrete plank with a curved industrial fencing on either side - it goes over a stagnant waterway, train tracks and San Leandro street. It's can be a long slow walk depending to and fro depending on the game and inning.
Despite it's aesthetic limitations, the experience of walking to and from a game is indeed memorable for a number of reasons. There is fan to fan camaraderie, hot dog vendors, bootleg T-shirts, it is lively an a unique and consistent experience. This a thing of beauty.
It is for sure one of the most underrated landmarks of the East Bay. Read here for a deeper reflection.
